OBJECTIVE:
To offer guidance to medical staff on:
- Recording clinical observations.
- Recognising normal variations and identifying when they change, indicating worsening symptoms or conditions.
- Understanding the physiological and anatomical basis for these variations.
CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS:
Clinical observations might encompass:
- Estimating hemoglobin-oxygen saturation (spo2, pulse oximetry)
- Oxygen delivery
- Respiratory rate (rr)
- Signs of respiratory distress
- Heart/pulse rate (hr/pr)
- Blood pressure (bp) – systolic, diastolic, and mean
- Temperature
- Level of consciousness
- Pain assessment
- In specific clinical scenarios, additional observations (e.g., neurological or neurovascular observations) may be necessary.
